The agency then reviews the complaint and decides whether or not to investigate. If the agency decides to investigate, it will assign a team of investigators to look into the issue.

If the agency finds that there is a safety issue with the vehicle, it will initiate a recall. A recall is an order from NHTSA to a manufacturer to fix a problem on a car or truck. Once the recall is initiated, the manufacturer has six months to fix the problem. If they do not fix the problem, NHTSA can force them to do so.
