A chatbot is a program that is specifically designed to perform online chat communication through either text or voice-to-voice, rather than giving direct human interaction through vocal contact. As the name suggests, a chat bot is like a chat broker who works on your behalf to engage people in a conversation through chat. These programs are designed by special Internet service providers (ISP) for use by individuals and companies for the purposes of business marketing, entertainment, real estate transactions, education, etc. It can also be used as an on-site assistant in many different businesses including retail stores, restaurants, banks, etc. Chat Bots are now very popular and are a great tool for online and Internet marketing.

Microsoft has recently partnered with six organizations to collectively create and launch a new project called "Microsoft bots". This was achieved after the creation of a Knowledge Base that included a chat bot interface that is able to successfully create a knowledge base for the general audience of the project. The other members of the team were Salesforce, IBM, Hootsuite, Google, and Twitter.

Microsoft's chat bots project has the aim of achieving the goal of conversational understanding of speech-language in the form of natural conversations. The chat bots were supposed to be able to make it possible for the end-users of the websites they are visiting to have an interactive experience while visiting the website. The conversational understanding was supposed to give the visitors an opportunity to understand whatever they were talking about and learn things from what they were learning. Conversational understanding is based on the artificial intelligence principle of self-improvement and consists of four elements are recognition, synthesis, adaptation, and motivation.

One of the most important requirements for these chat bots to achieve their goal of conversational understanding was the need for them to incorporate an artificial intelligence (AI) system that is superior to the knowledge base of the community it will be joining. The developers needed to be able to define a set of pre-programmed rules or algorithms, and then allow these to evolve and be refined as the system is used by the various users of the same bot. In addition, this also required the developers to provide an environment in which these rules could evolve and thrive. All this meant that the developers had to focus their attention on many different factors while designing the chat bot such as the various types of data and information available, the kind of environment it will live in, and how it will interact with the users.

Microsoft's chatbot also needed to be flexible and adaptable. They needed to be developed to be versatile enough to handle new types of chat applications and methods, they also needed to be flexible enough to accommodate different forms of communication and interaction. All of this meant that the developers of the bot had to constantly be on their toes and be willing to change the way the bot is used as new innovative ways of communications are discovered.

There have been many other bot technologies that have come and gone by the wayside, chat bots are but one of the many technologies that were released into the open. It is therefore not surprising that such technology was also a hit-and-miss success as well.
